Brazilian soybean farmers are holding back their crops rather than selling, expecting prices to rise as global supplies tighten. Brokers and buyers also cite fears that La Niña could limit the next South American crop and that domestic political tensions could weaken the real.
The farmers aim to pressure exporters and processors into paying more.
Reduced farmer selling tightens the physical soybean supply available to exporters and crushers, which supports international soy and meal prices. A weaker real would also make Brazilian exports cheaper, partly offsetting that support.
