The USDA forecasts that soybean oil demand from the renewable fuel sector will stay flat at about 12 billion pounds per year after 2022. Analysts, including LMC International's James Fry, expect U.S. biodiesel and renewable diesel demand to reach nearly 30 billion pounds by 2030.
Fry says the USDA projection looks inconsistent with the expected growth in renewable diesel.
A flat USDA demand outlook, if it proves accurate, would leave soybean oil supplies looser than industry forecasts suggest, weighing on prices. The gap between USDA and private forecasts makes the outlook uncertain.
