Reuters reports that a US diesel shortage is increasingly likely to persist until the economy slows. NY Harbor ULSD for December delivery trades at a $60/bbl premium to Brent, and the twelve-month spread has flared to a $50/bbl backwardation from under $10 a year earlier.
Retail diesel now sits $1.45/gal above gasoline, a record gap.
Tight distillate supplies raise freight and fuel costs for feed mills, grain handlers and livestock transport, which can pass through to feed and animal-product prices. The steep backwardation signals physical scarcity into winter.
