USDA's mid-October Ag in Drought report shows 70% of US winter wheat area in some stage of drought, versus 41% a year earlier. Seeding emergence in the southern Plains and Midwest is 10 to nearly 20 percent below average, and the 2022 harvest was down 14%.
Poor establishment and a drought-hit winter wheat crop raise the risk of lower US wheat output in 2023, supporting HRW and SRW prices and feed-wheat competitiveness.
