A Holland & Knight alert says Mexico's 2020 decree banning genetically engineered corn is set to take full effect on January 31, 2024. Mexican imports of U.S. yellow corn could be cut in half, from about 17 million tons.
Non-GE supply contracts are unlikely to fully replace the lost volume, and Mexican importers may pay about 26% more for non-GE corn.
Halving Mexico's roughly 17 million tons of U.S. yellow corn imports would remove a major export outlet and raise feed costs for Mexican livestock. The limited non-GE substitute supply points to continued downside pressure on U.S. corn export demand.
