Indonesia and Malaysia, the two largest palm oil producers, say they need more time for small producers to meet EU anti-deforestation requirements. Traders have until 1 January 2025 to implement the rules, which can lead to suspension of products and fines for offenders.
Traceability burdens on smallholder palm supply could constrain EU-bound palm oil and tighten availability, supporting palm oil prices. The effect is a longer-term medium driver.
