Former Indian agriculture secretary Siraj Hussain says consistent agri export policy is needed to reach a $100 billion export target. He notes that exports are currently restricted and only the state trader NCEL is permitted to export.
He adds that erratic monsoons in 2022 and 2023 cut output of wheat, rice, pulses and sugarcane.
Single-channel exports through NCEL and the lack of a clear policy add uncertainty to Indian rice and wheat export flows. Lower Indian production also limits supply to world markets.
