The US has requested a USMCA dispute panel ruling on Mexico's 2023 decree restricting genetically engineered corn for dough and tortillas and phasing it out for animal feed. US corn exports to Mexico totaled $4.25 billion in January to September 2024, making Mexico the largest buyer of US corn.
A panel report is awaited.
Mexico takes about 40% of US corn exports, and any move to restrict GM feed corn could cut demand for US yellow corn and weigh on prices.
