A legal commentary explains that the EU Deforestation Regulation applies to companies selling cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soya or wood products, and their derived goods. It defines deforestation-free sourcing as land not deforested after 31 December 2020.
Soy and palm oil exporters to the EU must prove deforestation-free origin, which can narrow eligible supply and add traceability costs. The effect on prices is modest while enforcement timing remains uncertain.
