DTN analyst ShayLe Stewart examines whether feeder cattle prices can keep rising after the CDC reported a New World screwworm case in a person who had traveled abroad and entered Maryland. Feeder cattle and boxed beef prices have rallied sharply over the past eight months.
The analysis says the U.S. border with Mexico is unlikely to reopen soon.
A closed border keeps feeder supplies tight, which supports feeder cattle prices. The screwworm risk also raises the chance of a domestic cattle detection, which could move prices sharply in either direction.
