On August 15, 2025, USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins announced its largest New World Screwworm initiative yet at the Texas Capitol with Governor Greg Abbott. The plan builds on a five-pronged strategy issued in June and involves FDA drug approvals, EPA and DOE technology work, CBP border protection, and CDC human-case management.
The pest threatens livestock, pets, wildlife and, rarely, people.
Keeping screwworm out of the US preserves the domestic cattle herd and supports the border closure to Mexican cattle, which tightens US supply and supports cattle futures and beef prices.
