The South African rand rose slightly in early trade to about 17.29 per dollar as gold surged above $3,800 an ounce. A weaker US dollar and expectations of further Federal Reserve rate cuts supported the move.
Traders were awaiting a run of local data including the central bank bulletin and budget figures.
The rand's link to gold and the dollar shows how US monetary policy transmits to emerging-market currencies that import feed inputs. A firmer rand modestly lowers South African import costs for feed ingredients.
