USDA's September Hogs and Pigs report showed total hog inventory at 74.472 million head, down 1% year over year, and a breeding herd of 5.934 million, down 2%. Minnesota breeding numbers fell 10%, and market hog inventory was down 1%, with summer farrowings down 3%.
Contracting hog numbers and lower farrowing intentions point to reduced pork supply ahead, which supports lean hog futures and tightens demand for hog-related feed.
