Japanese officials said they are ready to take appropriate action on the yen, and the yen rose against the dollar, with USD/JPY falling to about 156.9. The dollar index slid 0.4% to 98.3 and was on track for its biggest yearly fall in eight years.
The ECB held rates steady and signalled no near-term cuts.
Intervention threats and a weaker dollar can shift the cost of US-priced feed ingredients for importers in yen and other non-dollar currencies. The effect on grain and meal prices is indirect and limited.
