The US dollar strengthened against the Vietnamese dong on March 31, with Vietcombank selling at VND26,357 and the black market near VND27,112. The dollar index touched its highest since May and was heading for its biggest monthly gain since July, while the yen traded near 159.81 and the won hit its weakest since 2009.
Dollar strength driven by the Mideast oil shock weakens Asian currencies, raising the cost of dollar-priced grain and feed imports for Vietnam and other Asian buyers. A firmer dollar generally pressures US commodity prices.
