USDA's quarterly Hogs and Pigs report showed total hog inventory up 0.44% year over year, with the breeding herd down 1.47% to 5.892 million head. Sow numbers were revised lower from December, and the report came in below pre-report expectations.
Analysts expect near-term supply to be limited in late spring and summer.
A smaller breeding herd and tighter late-spring and summer supply point to firmer hog and pork prices, especially for bellies and trim. Feed buyers may see stronger hog-finishing demand for feed.
