Parts of the inland waterway system have shifted from low water to mild flooding, with higher currents making barge handling more difficult. Some barge companies are reducing the number of barges per tow on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers, particularly south of St. Louis.
The St. Louis gauge has risen considerably over recent weeks.
Fewer barges per tow and cautious navigation reduce barge capacity and raise freight costs for corn export shipments moving on the river. Soybean flows are less affected at this time of year.
