Spot basis bids for corn and soybeans shipped by barge to the U.S. Gulf firmed as river terminals struggled with loading problems from low water at St. Louis and high water at Cairo. Cold weather slowed grain movement along the Illinois River, and CBOT corn pulled back from a 16-month high.
Loading constraints and tight barge availability raise the cost of moving grain to the Gulf, supporting Gulf basis and export premiums and pressuring Gulf-linked buyers' costs.
