The USDA Grain Transportation Report says BNSF and Union Pacific cut rail tariffs for hard red winter wheat effective June 1, with BNSF down over $500 per car to Texas Gulf terminals. It also reports Panama Canal lock maintenance that reduces Panamax transit capacity to about 26 vessels per day.
Lower rail rates make HRW wheat cheaper to move to Gulf export terminals, supporting Gulf basis. Reduced Panama Canal capacity raises the cost of shipping US grain from the East Coast to Asia.
