A Reuters analysis examines whether adding corn acres in fringe areas such as North Dakota will lower national yields. North Dakota is about 3.3% of production with yields nearly 40 bushels per acre below the national average, and its 2021 drought cut yields to a decade low while national yield still hit a record.
Expansion into lower-yielding fringe acres could weigh on average national yield and total corn supply, which is a mild bearish-supply concern. The effect is modest because these acres are a small share of production.
