The USDA reported upland cotton planted area of 11.577 million acres, 3% below last year and below analyst expectations. Rice planted area was 2.661 million acres, down 375,000 acres from 2020 and close to pre-report estimates.
Harvested rice area of 2.616 million acres implies a steady abandonment rate.
Rice plantings well below last year's level tighten the expected US supply, which supports rice prices. Cotton acreage below expectations also affects the cottonseed meal supply chain, though it is not a listed commodity here.
