UC Davis plant geneticist Pamela Ronald is developing rice varieties with genetic traits that help plants survive drought and flooding. Her lab's early greenhouse experiments show engineered plants staying green under water stress while controls wilt.
The work builds on the Sub1 flood-tolerance gene, now used by millions of farmers in Asia.
This is long-term crop research with no immediate effect on rice supply or prices, though broader adoption of stress-tolerant varieties could eventually stabilize yields in flood- and drought-prone regions.
