Mexican rancher Lopez has for nearly 25 years shipped cattle north to the U.S. and imported beef into Mexico. He sends four to six trailers of young cows, three days a week, across the bridge to Pharr, Texas.
After USDA veterinary clearance, buyers from Texas, Arizona and as far as the Canadian border purchase the animals.
Cross-border feeder cattle flows add to U.S. feeder supply and show the ongoing integration of Mexican and U.S. cattle trade. The effect on futures prices is small.
