A DTN forecast update held May 23 said the severe drought across the southwestern U.S. is expected to last through most of summer, with close to 40% of the region in extreme or exceptional drought. Hopes for El Niño by autumn are being discussed as a possible relief path after a La Niña winter.
Drought in the Southwest mainly hits rangeland and cattle, tightening feed and grazing supplies and supporting cattle prices, while El Niño hopes point to a possible wetter outlook later.
