A Dutch member of the European Parliament said the EU will proceed with phasing out palm oil-based biofuel by 2030 despite threats of retaliation from Indonesia and Malaysia. Both countries have warned of restricting European imports and possibly filing a WTO complaint.
The policy is justified by deforestation and emissions concerns.
The EU phase-out removes a future demand outlet for palm-based biofuel, which is bearish for palm oil over the long term. Threatened retaliation by Indonesia and Malaysia adds trade risk for palm and vegetable oil flows.
