DTN reports the Army Corps is funding about $85 million to dredge the lower Mississippi to 50 feet, allowing Panamax ships to reach ports serving the Gulf. Advocates say the deeper channel will boost soybean revenues by about $450 million a year, based on a 2018 study.
Access for larger Panamax vessels should lower per-ton ocean freight for U.S. grain and improve competitiveness against Brazilian supply, which is supportive for U.S. soybean and corn values.
