MEP Delara Burkhardt presented a draft own-initiative report to the Parliament's Environment Committee on 2 July calling for mandatory due diligence for companies placing forest-risk products on the EU market. The draft includes reporting, liability and sanctions provisions.
The EU reportedly accounts for 7-10% of world consumption of deforestation-linked plant and animal products.
If adopted, mandatory due diligence could add compliance costs for soy and beef imports into the EU, supporting a premium for certified deforestation-free supply.
