A Chambers and Partners legal article explains that the EU adopted the EUDR on 31 May 2023. The regulation requires importers, traders and exporters to prove that cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soya, wood and derived products are deforestation-free, legally produced and covered by a due diligence statement.
Due diligence obligations on importers add paperwork and cost for soy, palm oil and cattle-derived products shipped to the EU, which can shift trade flows and affect EU import demand.
