U.S. and Canadian feeder cattle prices were at or near historical highs in late December 2024. The U.S. closed its border to Mexican feeder cattle after New World screwworm was detected near the Mexico-Guatemala border, and the market is currently pricing in no Mexican imports for 2025.
With roughly 1.2 million Mexican feeders normally entering annually, the import halt tightens feeder supplies and supports high feeder prices, while any resumption expected around March or April could weigh on futures.
