USDA's May cattle-on-feed report showed feedlot inventory on May 1 at 11.4 million head, 2% below last year, with April placements down 3% and marketings down 3%. Beef cold storage stocks were also below year-ago and five-year-average levels.
Lower placements and marketings point to tighter feedlot supplies and support cattle prices, while reduced feedlot throughput lowers near-term grain and meal demand from feedlots.
