# Oil falls after Energy secretary wrongly claims tanker escort

> US crude fell 11.94% to close at $83.45 a barrel on Tuesday, and Brent settled 11.28% lower at $87.80. Prices dropped more than 17% intraday after Energy Secretary Chris Wright wrongly posted that the US Navy had escorted a tanker through the Strait of Hormuz. The White House said no such escort had occurred.
