# T.N. may be heading towards a water crisis, unless northeast monsoon comes to the rescue

> Tamil Nadu's 15 major irrigation reservoirs held about one-third of their combined capacity, compared with roughly 92% at the same time the previous year. Although seasonal rainfall had reached about 240 mm, the state needs substantially more rain, particularly in November, to support water supplies and rice production.

## Why it matters

Low reservoir storage threatens irrigation in the Cauvery delta and could reduce Tamil Nadu's rice output if the monsoon fails to replenish supplies. A production shortfall would tighten local availability and put upward pressure on rice prices.
