# The "Perfect Storm" Behind This Season’s Purple Soybeans

> Soybean farmers in Wisconsin and neighboring Midwestern states are harvesting purple, chalky, and shriveled beans. Experts attribute the damage to a combination of genetic variation, purple seed stain, and Diaporthe seed decay, with mid-season dryness followed by heavy rain near harvest worsening the problems; Diaporthe can damage seed and reduce yields.

## Why it matters

Seed decay and damaged beans can reduce usable soybean supply and lead to discounts at grain elevators, supporting prices for sound beans relative to affected local supplies. The impact is concentrated in parts of the Midwest rather than indicating a broad production loss.
