# High-pathogenic avian influenza behind soaring egg prices; first case this winter confirmed at Yeoncheon layer farm

> South Korean authorities confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N9) at a layer farm in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi, holding about 91,000 hens, the first such case this winter. Authorities imposed a nationwide 24-hour livestock movement halt, tested 17 farms within 10 km, and designated a two-week nationwide disinfection period.

## Why it matters

Layer losses and culling tighten domestic egg supply and keep egg prices elevated, which can lift demand for feed ingredients like corn and soymeal in the short term only if flock losses spread; the immediate effect is limited to Korean egg and poultry markets.
