# State of soils after 50 mm for autumn sowings

> Heavy rain of 45-60 mm fell in the Ardennes after storm Austen, rewetting soils without major damage. Thin surface crusts have formed on the most fragile plots, around 15% clay, while more clayey soils are less affected. Disc-tilled seedbeds show visible surface sealing.

## Why it matters

Surface crusting can hinder seedling emergence and reduce autumn-sown cereal and oilseed yields, a modest supply risk for feed grains. The effect is local and limited so far, so price impact is minimal.
