# Canada tightens livestock import rules as New World Screwworm spreads in the U.S.

> The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has restricted imports of specified live animals from Arizona, New Mexico and Texas after New World screwworm was confirmed in those states. The restrictions cover cattle, bison, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, deer and several other species, whether destined for breeding, sale or slaughter. Canadian-owned animals returning from affected states must spend 21 days in an unaffected state before re-entry.

## Why it matters

Closing a major export-import channel for live cattle and other livestock tightens North American animal supply and may firm feeder cattle and hog prices while disrupting cross-border feeder flows. Feed demand implications are indirect but tied to herd sizing decisions.
