# Rabi Sowing Falls 46% as Deficient Monsoon Hits Soil Moisture

> India's rabi crop area stood at 3.756 million hectares as of October 30, down about 46% from a year earlier. Wheat planting covered only 19,000 hectares against 334,000 hectares at the same stage last year, and pulses and oilseeds sowing also fell sharply due to low soil moisture.

## Why it matters

A steep drop in wheat and oilseed planting points to a smaller Indian winter harvest and possibly more imports, which would support global wheat prices and tighten oilseed supply for meal buyers.
