# As KOSPI rises, the won-dollar exchange rate also rises

> Korean stocks and the won-dollar exchange rate have risen together since late October, breaking the usual pattern in which equity inflows strengthen the won. The won-dollar rate reached 1,341.5 won on November 4, up about 20 won in a week, with foreign investors buying dollar futures to hedge currency risk on their equity purchases. The won has also been supported by current-account surplus from semiconductor exports.

## Why it matters

Foreign hedging through dollar futures lifts the won-dollar rate even as equities rally, so the usual link between stock inflows and currency strength is weaker. For feed buyers, the won's volatility adds uncertainty to the local-currency cost of imported feed ingredients.
