# Screwworm Hits Arizona as Detections Soared in October

> USDA's APHIS confirmed the first New World screwworm livestock case in Arizona, a dog, and set up a 20-kilometer infested zone with animal movement controls and expanded trapping. After only eight cases in August and September, detections surged in October. Arizona is now the third US state with detections, after Texas and New Mexico.

## Why it matters

A surge in detections across several states raises the odds of wider movement controls on US livestock. That tightens cattle supplies and can lift prices, while also increasing demand for feed in areas where cattle are held longer.
