# NWS Detection Fuels Debate Over Mexico Border Reopening

> New World screwworm has been confirmed in a dog in Cochise County, Arizona, the third state affected since the outbreak began in June. The national total exceeds 70 cases, with 18 active, mostly in New Mexico. Federal officials are gradually reopening Mexican border ports to cattle imports despite criticism from industry groups.

## Why it matters

Reopening cattle imports while screwworm cases rise raises the risk of further movement restrictions, which would tighten US feeder cattle and live cattle supply and support prices. A sterile fly facility in Texas is not due until April 2027, so near-term supply pressure persists.
