# Rand firmer and gold off one-year low as oil slides on hopes of Iran deal

> The rand firmed about 0.4% to roughly R16.64 per dollar as crude oil fell sharply on hopes of a deal to end the war with Iran. Brent's January contract settled at $104.77 a barrel, down 7.63%, while spot gold recovered above $3,900 an ounce from a one-year low.
