# New World screwworm has been detected in Arizona. How cattle ranchers are preparing

> The Arizona Department of Agriculture reported the state's first New World screwworm case, found in a dog in Cochise County. Arizona Cattle Feeders' Association officials said producers are concerned but not panicking, and expected the detection after cases in Texas and New Mexico. Windstorms can carry screwworm flies far beyond their normal range.

## Why it matters

Screwworm detections in more states raise the risk of cattle movement limits and herd losses, which supports cattle prices. Ranchers may also face higher treatment and inspection costs.
