# Bird Flu Detected in Two Indiana Dairy Cow Herds

> The Indiana State Board of Animal Health reported H5N1 in two connected dairy herds in Newton County, detected in late October through routine milk surveillance. Samples were collected from the affected farms for follow-up testing. Under a USDA requirement, all lactating dairy cows must test negative before leaving Indiana.

## Why it matters

Detections in new dairy herds can lead to movement restrictions and extra testing that slow cattle and milk flows regionally. The two-herd scale limits the effect on national milk supply.
