# Protein-reduced feeding lowers ammonia emissions in dairy cows

> A one-year Swiss on-farm study by BFH-HAFL found that feeding dairy cows a rumen-protected methionine and lysine supplemented ration with 10 g less crude protein per kg dry matter cut ammonia emissions by 4.3% to 13.8%. Milk yield fell by 1.0 to 2.8 kg per day on the two farms studied.

## Why it matters

Lower crude protein rations may trim demand for protein meals in dairy feeding and favour protected amino acids. The effect on commodity prices is small at this scale.
