# New biotech corn produces its own methionine

> Rutgers University scientists have engineered corn that produces methionine, an essential amino acid, by inserting a bacterial gene into the corn genome. Synthetic methionine is normally added to livestock feed, so the researchers say the corn could cut feed costs. The work is at an early research stage.

## Why it matters

If commercialized, methionine-producing corn could eventually reduce demand for synthetic DL-methionine in feed, a long-term bearish signal for methionine and a modest negative for corn's feed-use value. The impact is distant and speculative for near-term prices.
