# Mediation underway as Canada Steamship Lines deck officer strike continues | CBC News

> Deck officers on Canada Steamship Lines' 12 self-unloading vessels began a strike on Saturday, and mediation is underway. The Thunder Bay port CEO said the strike is not yet affecting grain handling, mainly because the ships were carrying iron ore. He warned the impact on grain could grow if the strike continues.

## Why it matters

Grain is the largest cargo at Thunder Bay, so a prolonged strike that cuts vessel supply could slow Great Lakes grain exports. The effect so far is minor and mostly limited to iron ore.
