# CP Rail strike could be devastating for Western Canadian farmers

> Two unions representing about 3,400 Canadian Pacific workers formally served 72-hour strike notice, with engineers, conductors and signal workers set to walk out at 12:01 a.m. Saturday without a settlement. The railway is under pressure to clear a grain backlog and supply locomotives to the oil industry. A Western Canadian wheat official said farmers relying on CP could face unpaid deliveries.

## Why it matters

A strike would halt grain movement from the Prairies at the start of planting, tightening export supplies and delaying farm cash flow. Rail constraints already limit Canadian grain and oilseed deliveries.
