# Gasförmiges CO2 als chemischen Grundstoff für Methionin genutzt

> Professor Arne Skerra of the Technical University of Munich used gaseous CO2 as a raw material to produce methionine, an essential amino acid mainly used in animal fattening. Around one million tons of methionine are produced worldwide each year. The newly developed process could replace the existing six-stage petrochemical route, which requires toxic prussic acid.

## Why it matters

A CO2-based route could lower long-run methionine production costs and reduce reliance on petrochemical feedstocks. For feed buyers this is a future price consideration rather than a near-term driver.
