# Innscor counts avian flu losses - Commercial Farmers' Union of Zimbabwe

> Innscor Africa reports that avian flu killed more than one million chickens in South Africa and Zimbabwe between May and August 2017. Table egg volumes were 47% below the prior year, and day-old chick sales fell 10% for the year ended June 30, 2018. The group offset losses through hatching egg imports and other business lines.

## Why it matters

Lower egg and chick output reduces local poultry feed demand in southern Africa, though the impact is regional and the outbreak occurred last year.
