# Milk production continues to slow

> University of Wisconsin economist Bob Cropp reports US milk production was up only 0.5% in Q4 2018 and 0.2% in February 2019. US dairy cow numbers fell 77,000 head year on year, and record 2018 exports reached 15.8% of milk production. Retaliatory tariffs from China, Mexico and Canada dampened exports in the second half of 2018.

## Why it matters

Slowing milk output and falling cow numbers point to tighter US supply, which supports improved milk prices. Export demand remains a key support, but tariffs have weakened its growth.
